Pale is the New Tan, Part 3: Melanoma Awareness

Posted on June 1, 2013

Yesterday was the last day of Melanoma Awareness Month. By now (and especially if you’ve read my last two blog posts) you probably know all about the importance of prevention and protection against the sun’s damaging rays. But there is one last step – getting checked! Protecting your skin can decrease your chances in developing melanoma, but sometimes people who rarely go in the sun or who have fair skin, can also develop melanoma. Melanoma can sometimes be genetic. So it’s extremely important to get checked by a dermatologist every year for any suspicious looking spots. You can also do self-spot checks throughout the year to stay on top of any new developments. Do you know what to look for? In keeping an eye out for melanoma, you want to follow the ABCDEFG rule. That’s right. It’s not just the…

Pale is the New Tan, Part 2: Sun Safety

Sun Safety

The majority of patients that come into our office are concerned with the aging of their skin – loss of elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles. Anti-aging is one of the main focuses of skin care. The good news is, if you commit to a proper skin care regimen and treatment plan, you can slow down the aging process. The bad news is, once damage has been done, it cannot be reversed. It can be improved but never reversed. That’s why the #1 product you can use for anti-aging is SUNSCREEN to preventdamage from happening in the first place. Don’t get me wrong. The sun is not the only factor that speeds up the aging process. But it is the major reason. Pale is the New Tan, Part 1

Posted on May 15, 2013

Pale is the new tan. I saw that phrase on the cover of a magazine quite a few years ago. It was just about the time that I was really starting to adopt the idea that a tan is not all it’s cracked up to be. I’m a true Florida girl, born and raised in St. Petersburg. I spent my teenage years yearning to spend my days at the beach. Any chance I could get to meet my friends at Redington Shores, I took it. And I did NOT wear sunscreen. Well, that’s not necessarily true. I used tanning oil with an SPF 4. That counts, right? NO! But it didn’t matter, because sometimes I didn’t use any at all. There were days where I just used straight baby oil. Being half Italian, I could obtain a pretty nice bronze…

Word of the Day: Esthetician

Esthetician

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you probably know the meaning of the word “esthetician.” But you may be surprised to find out how many people don’t know who or what that is? I tell people my mother is an esthetician and some look at me like I have three heads. “What is an ess-di–huh?” So, if that word makes you want to scratch your head, this blog post for you! An esthetician is a licensed skin care specialist, trained in cosmetic treatment of the skin. To me, it has more meaning than just a mere “facialist.” It means they are fully licensed in preserving the health and beauty of the skin, and in performing cosmetic skin procedures and treatments. You may occasionally see it spelled “aesthetician,” which usually refers to an esthetician in a medical setting but today’s…
